Candidate profile :

David MacFarquhar Candidate Declaration:

I am presenting myself for the presidency of the Green Wing of the Green Party of Canada as member (and current CEO of Laurier—Ste-Marie, Montreal East) who is perplexed. I am up against a paradox: we have many strongly committed members who are leftist, however voters do not associate us with socialist politics and ideals. Socialism and environmentalism are interdependent, and I think the path to follow for the Green Party within Quebec is to embrace both of these elements. We need a vigorous popular opposition to neoliberalism at the federal level, one that inspires the mass of voters who are disillusioned with our pseudo-democracy.

To this end, as president of the AQPVC, I will prioritize three efforts:<
  • the establishment of Young Green associations in as many university institutions as possible, with the help of our new representative on the Young Green Council;
  • an rapprochement of relations between federal Green Party and the ecosocialist Green Party of Quebec; and
  • facilitating the search and training of strong leftist candidates who can promote and defend these ideals during the next election, in interested EDAs.
Although I understand that the presidency is not supposed to direct the policy of the Green Party of Canada in Quebec, given the organizational work that we are currently facing, I believe that it is important that the leaders have an ideological orientation, which I propose to bring to the AQPVC.

What relevant experiences and skills do you have that would make you an effective member of this board? Relevant areas of expertise/experience include, but are not limited to: fundraising, finance, campaign organization, prior board membership, communications, interpersonal skills (such as conflict avoidance and collaborative decision-making), legal, governance, human resources:

First of all, I am neither a civil servant nor an activist. My background is in physics, and I am currently a data engineer. That is to say, I believe in getting things done and taking responsibility. And I also bring diverse skills from a political organizer profile: I am a member of the Federal Data Team, which advises the federal council on messaging, and the EDA Empowerment group which collaborates on electoral preparation strategies at the constituency level; as CEO of my constituency I also make everything happen myself. I am familiar with the resources available at the federal level and I know what gaps must be filled for our French-speaking ACEs. As a recent graduate, I still have connections to university organizations to rebuild our presence there. I also ran as a candidate, at the provincial level with the Green Party of Quebec, so I have seen all aspects of this effort, and what’s more, I think I am one of the rare people who can repair this relationship.

Hello!

For those of you who have not seen my presentation, I am a young libertarian socialist, active within the party since the 2021 election, who wants to bring my leftist values to the executive council of the AQPVC. From the perspective of a young person who has crossed the political spectrum since my first vote, the Green Party of Canada has a unique opportunity to push back against the neoliberal policies that have undermined our society and accelerated the climate crisis over the past 40 years. years. Quebec, with its long history of progressive politics and activism, has a unique opportunity to show them the way, but instead we are left with a lack of committed members, no youth movement, and many people wondering why they shouldn’t just vote for the NDP. All the major parties are now talking about the environment, but none are willing to talk about capitalism’s role in the affordability crisis at home & in violent conflicts abroad, and in the failure of the objective of limiting the global warming threshold to 1.5°C, which seemed reasonable only 8 years ago.

The AQPVC can still be an example for the rest of Canada. By distinguishing ourselves from the NDP and the Bloc Québécois, we can fundamentally change the political conversation and show the rest of the country a path to success. We can attract young people and visionaries who will breathe life into the Wing and the party. A vote for me is a vote for an AQPVC assembly with the mandate to build the leftist public positions of the Party, to encourage and help the ACEs of Quebec to recruit and develop diverse candidates with leftist values and priorities that suit their communities. If you have any questions about my philosophy, whether political, ecological, economic or otherwise, I would be happy to discuss them, and I look forward to speaking with more of you during this campaign!

I think I have already presented myself well, and since we have not yet had the opportunity to address you directly in the public assembly, I cannot address the concerns of those who would have spoken. However, I can emphasize the purpose of my application by referring to why it was reported. On Thursday, thousands of people gathered to mourn the loss of a folk hero who sang against capitalism, against the privatization of our resources, against the Western imperial machine. It is certain that among them, we can find quasi-activists ready to fight for such an ecosocialist political program in Quebec. But our Green Wing must show them our commitment to these values. It’s just volunteers, we will find voters there too, young people (and others) who are thinking of voting NDP today because we are failing to embrace the fundamentally leftist identity of green values. We are wasting our time chasing disaffected conservative voters. If we want to achieve electoral success in Quebec, this is how we will find it.

To this end, as I believe in decentralization, it is up to us the council to support you at the local level. We need to speak out on the issues, we need to be present in our communities, but it’s up to you to determine how to do it. Open a bank account? We will direct you to relevant resources. Be visible at demonstrations? We will help you procure materials. Form a Marxist book club? I will participate in it. We have here a great opportunity to bring together a radically progressive vision on the political terrain of Canada, we must seize it.

I hope I’ve inspired you a little, and I look forward to speaking to you at the town hall.
